What CEREC means
CEREC stands for “Chairside Economical Restoration of Esthetic Ceramics,” describing a system that designs and mills ceramic restorations directly in the dental office during your appointment. The goal is to provide a strong, natural-looking crown without needing an outside dental laboratory or multiple visits.
How the same-day process works
The visit typically begins with digital impressions using an intraoral scanner, so there are no traditional trays or messy impression materials. The dentist then designs your crown on a computer (CAD software) and uses an in-office milling unit (CAM) to carve the crown out of a solid block of ceramic before bonding it to your prepared tooth.

Only one appointment is usually needed, saving time and reducing time off work or school.
There is no need for a temporary crown, so you avoid the risk of it loosening or breaking between visits.
Digital design and milling allow for a very precise fit, which can improve comfort and chewing efficiency.
High-quality tooth-colored ceramics are used, so the crown can blend naturally with your surrounding teeth.
Durability and limitations
CEREC crowns are made from strong ceramic materials designed to withstand normal biting and chewing forces for many years when cared for properly. In certain complex bite situations, heavy grinders, or cases that require metal or specialty materials, a traditional lab-made crown may still be recommended, so a thorough exam is important before deciding which option is best.
